How Black Seed Oil Is Made
Starting with the seed
Black seed oil comes from the seeds of Nigella sativa, a flowering plant native to Southwest Asia and the Mediterranean region. The small, black seeds are harvested from the plant's seed pods once they mature and dry.
Before pressing, seeds are typically cleaned to remove debris, dust, and any damaged seeds that could affect the quality of the final oil.
The pressing process
The most common method used for quality black seed oil is cold-pressing. Seeds are fed into a mechanical press, which applies pressure to break down the seed and release the oil. The oil is then separated from the solid seed material (called the seed cake or press cake).
The resulting oil is unrefined — it retains its natural color, aroma, and composition without the addition of heat or chemical solvents.
Filtration
After pressing, the oil typically goes through a filtration step to remove fine particles and sediment. This produces a cleaner, more stable oil without altering its core composition.
Some oils are left minimally filtered or unfiltered, which may result in a cloudier appearance. Neither is inherently better — it depends on the producer's process and quality controls.
Bottling and storage
Once filtered, the oil is bottled. Amber or dark glass is commonly used because black seed oil is sensitive to light. Exposure to UV light can degrade certain compounds — including thymoquinone (TQ) — in the oil over time, so packaging plays a role in shelf stability.

What affects quality
Several factors influence the quality of the finished oil: the origin and variety of the seed, how it was grown and harvested, the cleanliness of the pressing equipment, the temperature during extraction, and how the oil is stored and packaged.
